WordPress 4.0 has been released, and brings with it some pretty nice new features. You can read about many of the new features in the official release announcement.
That said, as I’ve begun testing the new release so that we can implement it, I’ve noticed one feature that was removed from the system. You no longer seem to be able to force SSL on logins-only. If you enable SSL for logins, WordPress will automatically force SSL for the whole admin area. If you were previously using the FORCE_SSL_LOGIN constant in your wp-config file, and you weren’t using FORCE_SSL_ADMIN as well, you’ll definitely want to do some testing. If you’re lucky, everything will work fine. In our case, though, we’ve run into a few issues that I’ll need to track down and fix before I can roll out the update.
With that out of the way, I will take a moment to say that I really like many of the new features in WordPress 4.0. The new media area is really nice. The improved plugin interface is a good step along the way to making that process a lot more friendly. The best new feature, in my humble opinion, is the updated visual editor. In the new visual editor, when you embed a gallery or other supported embed, the preview of the actual embed will appear in the editor, rather than just showing a placeholder or shortcode.
I hope you enjoy the new version as much as I do, and hopefully we can get the SSL issue solved on our main site quickly, so that I can make all of these new features available to our users.
